Edward Thring: The Architect of Uppingham's Legacy

Our educational philosophy is rooted in the vision of Edward Thring, the distinguished educator who served as Headmaster of Uppingham School from 1853 to 1887. He recognised the unique value of every individual and believed that every pupil deserved the opportunity to flourish in their own way. Uppingham was founded in England in 1584, but it was Thring—often celebrated as the School's "second founder"—who transformed its course. Appointed Headmaster at the age of 31, he dedicated his life to developing Uppingham from a small local grammar school into a nationally renowned boarding school, distinguished by its pioneering philosophy of holistic education.

A Pioneering Vision That Transformed Education

As a visionary educator, Thring believed that education should embrace every aspect of life, nurturing the moral, spiritual, physical and intellectual development of each pupil.

• Innovation in Physical Education: In 1859, he opened the first purpose-built school gymnasium in England and provided pupils with access to a swimming pool—ground-breaking developments at the time.
• Expanding Intellectual Horizons: Thring challenged traditional educational conventions by introducing modern languages, the humanities and sport into the formal curriculum.
• Championing the Arts: In 1865, he established Uppingham's first music school. In 1869, he founded the Headmasters' Conference (HMC), an organisation that continues to play an influential role in British independent education.

His book, The Theory and Practice of Teaching (1883), remains an enduring source of guidance and inspiration for generations of educators.

A Living Legacy in Hung Yen

Each day, pupils at Uppingham Hung Yen will pass the statue of Edward Thring within the School grounds. It will serve as a lasting reminder of the remarkable legacy of an educator who devoted his life to supporting, inspiring and empowering generations of young people.
